Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is the oldest and one of the foremost institutes in technology and applied research in India. Established in 1847 as College of Civil Engineering under British Empire, the institute has seen a long journey in officially becoming an institute of national importance in 2001 by becoming the 7th IIT through IIT Roorkee act. History, as it is said, is a great teacher, and given our glorious and long heritage of over 160 years, we had a long time to learn. Combine that with the latest cutting-edge technologies and you have IIT Roorkee in a nutshell!
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS
Founded in 1880 in USA, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), is a not-for-profit professional organization that enables collaboration, knowledge sharing and skill development across all engineering disciplines, while promoting the vital role of the engineer in society. It has become the most heard organization of Mechanical Engineers with a worldwide membership of about million.
ASME IIT ROORKEE, STUDENT SECTION
ASME IIT Roorkee Chapter, the first and leading chapter of ASME in India, was officially registered as a society in Feb 2007 by some enthusiastic students of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department (MIED). Since then, the section has been working continuously towards providing the students of the campus a better insight to technology and exposure to practical work through various events round the year. The section has also played key role in promoting ASME in India by helping a number of colleges establish ASME Student Section in their campuses. The efforts of the section were appreciated in very first year of operation by declaring it the best ASME section in India. Also, the visionary leadership helped the section become the first section outside USA to be awarded prestigious Diversity Action Grant (DAG). A team of ASME IIT Roorkee also participated in Efficycle'10 (a HPV Competition) and won the Utility & Maneuverability Award. With about 250 members and an enthusiastic leadership, the section is determined to achieve greater heights in future.

On the Spot EventsA number of exciting on the spot events are organised regularly under ASME, IIT Roorkee Chevalet This year opener on the spot event was organized on 16th September 2012. The students had to make a suspension bridge out of the material provided. One that could withstand maximum load won the competition. |
